I think online classes would work for you. online degrees are best for those wishing to move forward in their careers and acquire a degree at the same time. it would be best if you looked around for online colleges & univeristies and then decide on a degree program.
for a list of accredited, cheap and convenient online colleges & universities simply visit: http://www.onlineedublog.com/

Check your local community colleges for online and cable-based courses. For the first two years, this is a good and affordable option (do NOT do the expensive private onlines). Perhaps one night class a week might be good as well. I would start with two courses to get back into the swing of studying. You should start with English and maybe one other course like psychology. Then gradually build up.
Congrats on your decision to go to school. Your local CC can also help you with career and college counseling (people and/or online sites) that can help, but you need a certain number of general courses so put in your application today! It's a great adventure, and your son will be very proud of you (esp when you can help him with his math homework). :)
You do need cable for the cable-based programs, but you can start watching them now. I have gotten hooked on math 100, pharmacology and microbiology even not being a student! That should also make you more comfortable--our CC cable instructors are very good, hopefully yours will be too.
