Best Military Branch To Join?
What is the best branch of the military to join if I do not want a boring 9 to 5 desk job. I also plan on making the military a career? Do you have any specific MOS you would recommend? Please provide details below and would love to hear your feedback. Here are some of my own thoughts.
Of the four branches, each has good and bad qualities
Marines – not the smartest branch, and most go to combat. If you want to see combat then the Marines is the way to go.
Air Force – lazy and well paid. These guys get good duty stations, dont work hard and get paid well. They don’t promote fast so that’s the downside.
Army – really big, goes to combat, but I would say they are the worst of all. Poor leadership and terrible living conditions.
Navy – Go on ships, but you see the world. Many other duty stations all over the world. If you really want to travel then this is the best. Advancement is not too hard, and pay is alright. Going special forces in the Navy is the smartest choice. Extra pay, combat and you will be the celebrity of the navy.
I’d say the Navy is the best branch, if I am to be lazy and paid well but not advance fast then Air force (chair force) is the way to go.

You need to decide FOR YOURSELF what branch is best for you. None of us know you; we can’t give you an accurate decision. Here’s some basic info about all 5 branches:
US Marine Corps – By far the most challenging branch. Very combat-oriented. Long deployments. Longest boot camp. Marines put the most stock in their Physical Fitness Test. They’re also the most proud. Talk to an Airman and ask her what she does and she’ll say, “I’m in the Air Force.” Ask a Marine what he does and he’ll say “I AM a Marine.”
US Army – Second most challenging physically after the USMC. Lot of pride here too. Best enlistment and re-enlistment bonuses – but keep in mind that can easily change, and money is easily spent. Very long deployments. Fastest promotions of any branch. Largest branch.
US Air Force – Currently close to the Army in terms of physical fitness requirements (AF BMT requirements are more stringent than Army BCT requirements, but thereafter AF requirements drop off). Known as “the smart branch” because it attracts technology-minded types and currently has the most personnel with degrees beyond a High School diploma. Shortest deployments. Some say it has the best quality of life. Slowest advancement.
US Navy – About equal to the AF in terms of physical fitness requirements. Medium-length deployments, but Sailors go out to sea whereas Airmen, Soldiers, and Marines are on land and usually have a means to get in contact with their families; Sailors’ laptops and cell phones usually don’t work. Long and proud history. Lots of opportunities to complete a degree while out to sea.
US Coast Guard – Some say the CG has shorter deployments than the AF but that’s not always true; typically they go out to sea for 2 months, come back for 2 months, and go back out for a period of 6 to 18 months straight. Most stringent entrance requirements (you’ll be with high-quality people – not that other branches’ members are low-quality by any means). Technically under the Department of Homeland Security (unlike the other branches, which are in the DOD).
As far as suggesting a MOS (or AFSC for Air Force jobs and rate for Navy / CG jobs), I can’t do that without knowing your goals. Think about what you’d want to do if you were to remain a civilian, and then look for the equivilant in your branch of choice. Also think about where your talents lie. I have a friend who is in electronics but is terrible at it, and therefore is regularly frustrated at work.
I think you run the risk of getting a boring desk job no matter what branch. My boyfriend just separated from the air force after ten years because he hated his boring desk job. If combat doesn’t bother you I would suggest the army or maybe marines, you won”t be behind a desk when your in Iraq.
Im currently in the AIR FORCE…..im getting gout because i have a nice job lined up and it will pay more….but if i didn’t have those things lined up…i would stay right where im at now. living is good, lots of jobs, but it takes 20+ years to make the rank. 3P0X1
Security Forces or nothing!
as a Marine, AF is the only branch i understand people doing 20years.
Now… for fun on the otherhand…
USMC all the way
MOS
0311, 0313, 0321, 0331, 0341, 0351, 0352
Marines Infantry
HooAh
i would have to say marine’s also. navy would be the worst choice.
Marines. be supply admin. you will pick up rank fast and get more money.
Not sure why Navy would be worst choice. Most technical. Duty stations world wide. 6 month deployments (other branches double or more). World wide travel. Most career fields.
As far as staying away from desk jobs….Depends on what you want to do. Avionics, Engineering, Advanced Electronics, Computers, Nay has it all!
Marines- Department of the Navy. Have a rep of being “hard core” and stupid (jarhead). they claim to be the most elite or people think so but, take a look at SOCOM website and you will see who has the most elite warriors. Their elite RECON unit requires a lot of training from the Army(Ranger,Airborne,Reconnaissance and Surveillance Leader Course). By the way deep RECON units in the Army are not even considered SPEC OPS look up Army Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol Teams.
Navy- The only other real branch besides the Army (The other two came from the Army and Navy).Promotion is Faster in the Army, according to the Navy Times, their own service newspaper.
Air Force-Goes to combat just like every other branch. I know I was actually there during the invasion of Iraq. Everyone thinks of them flying but, this is a small part of the Air Force. You have a better chance of being a pilot in the Army.
Army- The Original and largest branch. The most opportunities, more SPEC OPS units. Newly renovated Barracks, faster promotions, go higher in the ranks (more E9 slots then anyone), which means better retirement. 150 different entry level positions, 225 after the first 3yrs. Best education benifits, number one university in the world(according to Forbes Magazine). More boats than the Navy. The Army has everything I encourage you to stop asking people their opinion and just compare facts.
I looking to join the Airforce I wanted to know which job should I go for that will qualify me to be a Port Authority Police Officer once I decided to leave the Airforce?
I looking to join the Airforce I wanted to know which job should I go for that will qualify me to be a Port Authority Police Officer once I decided to leave ?
About to join the airforce and I was wondering which job I should choose if I’m looking to become a Port Authority police officer after I’ve served??
What about the Coast Guard? Is it good to go to?
