  • yes you can. the books, the tuition etc. it is part of the total education expense. it would not be challenged.

  • Q&A time

If your expenses are required by your educational institution as part of your enrollment, yes, they are deductible expenses. If I were you, I would deduct it, you would not go wrong!
Click on below link and read some examples. http://www.irs.gov/publications/p970/ch0…
“Related expenses. Student-activity fees and expenses for course-related books, supplies, and equipment are included in qualified education expenses only if the fees and expenses must be paid to the institution as a condition of enrollment or attendance.”
    Example 1.
Jackson is a sophomore in University V’s degree program in dentistry. This year, in addition to tuition, he is required to pay a fee to the university for the rental of the dental equipment he will use in this program. Because the equipment rental fee must be paid to University V for enrollment and attendance, Jackson’s equipment rental fee is a qualified expense.

No you can’t. You can take an education credit for tuition and fees, but not for other expenses.

  • No, only tuition and items that you are required to purchase from the school qualify for the educational expense deductions.

Doubtful. Even if you could, you’d have to itemize deductions to do so.

I dont see why you couldnt. Im facing the same issue. Im taking online courses from a college campus I no longer live near to finish my General Eds, and I was told I could most likely use the internet, as you cant take the internet courses without it…

  • So much for Republicans being against new taxes

  • You can also deduct the amount you spend on tax preparing, so that’s another perk.

  • Wow. I can’t understand how France lost. That was a quick exit. I assumed that they had a good shot to do well in this years world cup. I guess I will have to wait. Maybe its time to jump on the Argentina bandwagon. Looks like Demichelis has already scored. Go Argentina. To make me feel better from that devistating loss by France, I have been watching some funny jokes.. This one made me laugh really hard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3j7uSbccSc

  • Q4. What education expenses qualify for the American opportunity tax credit?

    A. The term “qualified tuition and related expenses” has been expanded to include expenditures for “course materials.” For this purpose, the term “course materials” means books, supplies and equipment needed for a course of study whether or not the materials are purchased from the educational institution as a condition of enrollment or attendance.

Q5. Does an expenditure for a computer qualify for the American opprtunity tax credit?

    A. Whether an expenditure for a computer qualifies for the credit depends on the facts. An expenditure for a computer would qualify for the credit if the computer is needed as a condition of enrollment or attendance at the educational institution.
