Are you considering the option of an online education for yourself? What are the best options for you? When you are about to take the next big step of your life, it is important to understand the pros and the cons as well. Do you have lots of questions and doubts in your mind regarding this subject? Benefits of online education are numerous and outweigh the disadvantages. The best deal about online education is that there are no constraints related to time and space. It is the biggest advantage of online education. You can learn anytime and anywhere. You can schedule your studies as per your choice.

Constant nagging, controlling nature, habit of showering oodles of criticism, lack of appreciation, habit of taking away your due credit, screaming and shouting for no reason at all, etc. maybe some of the traits of your boss that you find hard to deal with. You get tempted to do yourself some good by resigning. But it gets difficult to resign when you love your job, the workplace and everything else except your boss who is trampling all over your life. A boss is a character that is the most discussed one in an organization. Some are lucky to have a gem of a supervisor while the others curse their luck. Here are some strategies on how to deal with a difficult boss. Give them a try before you take the big step.

Strategies on how to deal with a difficult boss
Section – A deals with the phase 1 of your workplace. It is the phase when you try understanding the ways of your boss and analyze him to know him better. The second section is the second phase, when your boss is way beyond your comprehension and you need to take some hardcore steps to set things right. You should not jump to the second part. It is important to know whether you actually did all the necessary things in Section A before you go jumping to the Section B.

SECTION – A
1.	Dealing with them does not mean transforming them: You cannot change your boss. It would be an uphill task to do so. You can though, change your perception about them. You should try not to be in hurry to label your boss as a demon.

2.	Examine your own performance: Before you lash out at your boss it is important to understand whether your stand is justified at all. You should evaluate your own performance at the office. If possible take more inputs from your colleagues.

3.	Analyze the behavior of your boss: A behavior and a person are two different entities. Your difficult boss can be a gem of a person. He may not be actually aware that he is being too difficult you. You should take time to think and analyze whether the bad behavior is due to some work related tension or lack of patience or management skills.

4.	Know the dos and don’ts: You should try to understand the way your boss works. Observe what ticks him on and off. Some conflicts arise due to miscommunication. Next time onwards try communicating with your boss and understanding his or her views. If possible share with him your own ideas.

5.	Ask for suggestions from your colleagues: You can always ask your colleagues how they deal with the boss. It is possible that you may be missing something. But take note of keeping your talks with your colleagues a low profile matter because the last thing you would want your boss is to accuse you of snooping around the office trying to get information on him.

6.	Do not lose your professionalism: Remember at the end of the day you and your boss are working on the same side. It would always be appreciated to not to let your conflicts harm the organization.

SECTION – B
7.	Do not react emotionally to the verbal abuses: When your boss attacks you verbally he is setting a trap for you. The more you react emotionally the more you find yourself in deep waters. In this situation, keep your calm and stay quiet. If he still continues exercising his lungs and throat, just tell him that he is right and you are sorry. It doesn’t give him much to attack you with again.

8.	Do not confront but rather discuss: You need not take up all the abuses of your boss. You tried to be calm but at the end you may find yourself at the receiving end too often. What you need to do is to go ahead and talk it out with your boss. If possible seek his advice and tell him that you want to improve.

9.	Make valuable contacts and expand you network: If possible find yourself a mentor who is superior to your boss. Once you have befriended your mentor do not begin complaining against your boss. Instead have a casual talk and tell your mentor about your views. Your mentor can help you out of the difficult situation.

10.	Document: Your employer may have the habit of taking up your due credit. If you want to be on the safer side document everything. You can make a record of everything ranging from your achievements to your hard work.

11. Have an alternative plan B: If things are going beyond the limit you need to clear out quite a few things with your boss. But before you talk to him have an alternate lucrative job offer in your hand. It gives you more power and takes away a bit of the power of your boss.

12.	Gather support: You can gather the support of your colleagues and go to the higher authorities. You can have a chat with them about the unreasonable behavior of your boss. Remember do not go up the line unless you are sure that you have no other option.

13.	Look for a transfer: If you love the job and do not want to leave it then try for a transfer in another department. It can be your escape route.

14.	Go up the command: Neither you may have any support from your colleagues nor you may find yourself a transfer. You can go to the higher authorities now and explain them your stand. Remember once your boss gets to know about it he may not like it. It is important therefore that you take up this initiative when you have tried everything else. Moreover, to be on a safer side, you can take this step only when you have another job option in your hand.

15.	Part ways: You have tried just everything and your boss is still the same and has become even worse since you went up to the higher authorities. In such a scenario you can do only one thing –
Say goodbye to your boss, the workplace and the job. But when you leave, do not explode at your boss. You may meet him at some point of your career. It’s important that you leave with dignity.

Last but not the least you must remember that being a boss is always a tough task. But of course it doesn’t give them the license to behave with their sub-ordinates in an unacceptable manner. You can always try out the above strategies on how to deal with a difficult boss before you say the final goodbye. Good luck with your job!

The ability to negotiate your way through everything is a skill that many wish they had. But alas! Not many are skilled enough to talk their way out of everything – be it the situation when you are caught being inefficient or be it about the raise in your salary. You may love your job and your workplace. You may have a good boss as well. But are you satisfied with your pay or do you want a raise? There are countless people who want a raise but are either too embarrassed or too scared to ask the question. Some are helpless because they don’t know how to approach their boss. Are you confused on how to negotiate your next raise? No matter how difficult it may seem you can actually negotiate your raise without worrying too much about the consequences if it isn’t a success. You need to follow a particular plan of action. This plan of action for the simplicity sake has been divided into four basic steps.

1.	Know your worth
When you are thinking about how to negotiate your next raise its important that you self-evaluate your own worth. You can ask yourself how important you are for the organization. An organization always likes to appreciate and encourage the assets of the company. Are you a valuable asset? You can think about the ways you have helped the company to clear some hurdles. A successful employee is always the one who either makes money for the company or at least saves money for the company. You may categorize yourself as per the evaluation. Now, you can make a list about your achievements in the company, the projects you have contributed in, the valuable customers that you have brought in, etc. It is in vain to ask for a next raise if your boss doesn’t considers you as an asset. Your boss would simply ask you to help yourself the way out if you ask for something which you are not worth of.

Your next step is to do a bit of homework. You should collect data and statistics about the current salary range for your job in the market. You can even use various sites which offer you the assistance in comparing your salaries. Moreover you can ask your friends or acquaintances who are working on the same post. You can further consult with the HR Professionals of your own company. When you have collected the required data you can actually compare your current salary with the standard salary. Now you have to select the specific amount of raise you want to ask.
When your boss asks you, ‘why should I consider giving you a raise?’ You should not reason that you need a raise since you are running low financially. Your boss doesn’t have anything to do with your personal life no matter how much caring he may sound. You must understand that the job of your boss is to make profit. You have to show your boss that you are an invaluable asset to the company. You should make your boss believe that investing in you, promises the company more profit. You should be a professional and should avoid describing your personal sad stories to him.

2.	Fix the meeting
You don’t start talking about your raise anywhere and anytime you feel like. The next basic step of how to negotiate your next raise is to schedule a proper meeting with your boss. You can tell your boss that you need his assistance to plan for your future ahead. It is important to note that timing is a factor that matters in scheduling. If it’s just 3 months since you joined the company and you are planning to ask a raise it would be better to wait. It clearly depicts that you were not efficient in negotiating your salary during the time when you were hired. Your boss will not entertain any talk about a raise in such an early span of time. A one year time is good enough to consider for a raise though. The time when annual reviews are presented would be good to schedule such a meeting as well. It will be helpful if you check with the general norms of your companies whether your company increases pay frequently at the mid-time or annually.

3.	Rehearse
Before the actual shot, it is advisable that you rehearse your dialogues well. You should know your dos and don’ts. You can jot down the points that you want to talk to your boss and practice speaking the lines. It would be useless to go to the meeting unprepared. It is important that you make your case as strong as you can. Now you are fully prepared to talk to your boss.

4.	Final Shot
You should not sound demanding and accusing when you are talking to your boss. You are there to discuss and negotiate things not to begin a war. You should be polite and gracious in your conversation. You should try to be direct rather than beating around the bush. But, of course it doesn’t mean that you tell your boss directly, “either you give me a raise or I quit!” You need to show him your perspective. You need to talk about your career and how much you love the job. You should tell him that you want to grow more in the company. You can ask him your options. It will not be rude of you to show him the statistics about the current standard salary range for your job in the market and then you can set forth your demand. You can feel free to tell him that you would appreciate a raise of let’s say $3,000 annually. It should be noted that the amount of the raise should be specific. This gives a chance to your boss to come out with his view about the matter.

If your boss agrees to your proposal thank him graciously and leave. Later on, you can keep track of the process by contacting your HR department. But if your boss says that he cannot give you a direct $3,000 raise but wishes to compromise on it then thank him and tell him that you would think about his renewed offer. It is important that you think about the offer before deciding. When your boss says no to your demand do not feel embarrassed. It was your right to ask for a raise. You can ask him graciously the reason for such a decision and how you can be eligible for any such considerations in the future. Thus, you can leave with a positive frame of mind since now you know what you have to do to get that desired raise.

If you have been contemplating on an online education degree or diploma for improving your career, you must consider weigh in the pros and cons first. Online education has evolved as the next best thing in the world today; it is one of the greatest alternatives to classrooms and lectures you have to attend. Besides, you will also find innumerable advantages of these courses in terms of the freedom and liberty it offers to you; you can sit back at home and enjoy your classes without even moving out of your comfort zone.

In this modern age, people are fast turning to the online colleges for obtaining accelerated diplomas and degrees in order to enhance the way ahead to their careers. With these fast and easy degrees, you can as well obtain college education very fast without indulging in any major degree programs that would seem ordinary. The most important and attractive thing about these online courses is that to offer an accelerated degree – which means you can get a quick degree by the means of distance education. You can get these degrees in less than 50% of the time you would otherwise have to invest for a regular course. Also, these degrees are less expensive and offer you a lot of freedom of studying as well.

Usually, the online education courses are designed mostly for the adult learners with the desire for enhancing the career fields with proper degree that can be completed in lesser time than traditional colleges would require. Online degrees have proven to be the ideal platform for most working professionals, since they do not have the time to attend colleges or universities because they are working. Most working professionals opt for further studies, and earlier they would either have to quite their job or simply forget about further studies. However, that has changed a lot and the present scenario seems to be a lot more comfortable and easy. There are many myths associated with the online learning courses, including the degrees and diplomas that one must understand.

During the past few decades, distance education was actually taking the nation by a storm with the internet colleges becoming more popular and more students opting to take up such courses of online degrees. It is indeed an innovative thought about further education, with assignments, lectures, discussions, presentations, readings and even examinations being held online. E-learning as it is common known has worked for most students; however, it has also not proven to be good for some. Therefore, it is important to understand what are the pros and cons of this new age of studying in virtual classrooms and how you can benefit from the same.

Pros of Online Education
Flexible timing is one of the first and foremost advantages of online education. There is no definite time for studying on the computer; therefore, you are at the liberty to work, plan your schedule and finally choose your free time zone to go ahead with your online courses. This is one of the major features of online education that has actually made a lot of difference to the lives of people.

Traditionally, colleges demand some specific work hours, which is not the case with online courses. Hence, you are free and you will be eager to study at your own sweet will. If you consider the geographic constraints of colleges, considering the unavailability of some courses in your local colleges, you might love the idea of enrolling yourself in the online education program of some college that is far away from your city. This would give you the opportunity to pursue your most desired course very easily. That’s the benefit of online courses.

Taking notes during lectures is tedious. With online education programs you have everything written out for you. The online classes are more technologically advanced than any other learning programs. The instructors would help you with learning aids by providing links and information related to relevant sites. With online programs, you can choose from a wide range of courses with very limited eligibility criteria set for you. In fact, most students can opt for any of the programs that they prefer. That’s indeed more than you could ask for.
Finally, online colleges do not have a dress code. That’s a breather, indeed!

Cons of Online Education
As there are several advantages of online education, a couple of disadvantageous points should be noted as well. First of all, there is no discipline or time management whatsoever. As flexibility of time is considered to be an advantage of online education, it certainly does affect the time management aspect of student life. Meeting deadlines, attending classes on time, punctuality and discipline are worst hit areas.

There is no direct interaction with the mentor or instructor of the class. This is certainly not a feasible method of studying, as eye-contact and interaction is very important during lectures for the students to develop understanding of the subject.

Online education classes create an isolated environment for students; making friends, discussing classes and communicating is hardly an option. Therefore, it leads to loneliness and boredom, which eventually affects the learning opportunities as well. Students who want to take up online education must have proper access to computer and advanced technology. Although you need not be computer literate, you ought to be comfortable with this technology. This is mandatory, as the computer then becomes your medium of learning for the virtual classroom that is created.

Are you frustrated with your current position at work? Would you like to advance in your company? If you would like to do so, you may be interested in asking for a promotion. The question is should you? When it comes to determining if you should ask for a promotion, it is something that you may not want to do on impulse. Asking from a promotion can work in your favor, but there are no guarantees. A promotion request can cause no changes or it can cause you harm. For that reason, there are a number of factors that you will first want to take into consideration, before you ask your boss for a promotion.

One of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration, when determining if you should inquire about a promotion, is an open position. If you want to be promoted, do you even know if there is an open position or one that will soon open? This, alone, can improve your chances of receiving a promotion, as they often say that timing is everything. What you will want to do is keep your eyes and ears open. If you hear of any open positions in your company or if you see job listings online or in your local newspaper, you may want to consider asking your supervisor for a promotion.

Your length of employment is another factor that should be taken into consideration, before you make a decision about asking for a promotion. While there are no guarantees, your chances of receiving a promotion are higher with long-term employment. Many companies like to promote from within, as well as promote those who have been with the company for an extended period of time. A short employment term doesn’t mean that you can’t ask for a promotion, but it is just one of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration.

Your intentions are another factor that you should take into consideration, when trying to determine if you should ask your supervisor for a promotion. Are you interested in leaving the company in search of a better job, such as one that may offer better pay or better benefits? If you are interested in doing so, you may want to consider asking for a promotion, but in a pleasant matter. If you are looking for “greener pastures,” you may have nothing to lose by asking for a promotion. In fact, you may be surprised with the answer that you hear. Many employers will use promotions or higher pay to retain employees who they do not want removed from their team.

Of course, you don’t want to instigate workplace gossip, but you may want to see if any other employees have asked for a promotion in the past. Did they see success or were they turned away? Speaking of which, were there any complications that arose from the asking of a promotion? This is important, as it may give you an idea as to whether or not you should ask for a promotion. As a reminder, it is important to not take the approach of gossiping to get your information, but you may just want to keep your eyes and ears open.

If you do decide that you would like to ask your supervisor or supervisors for a promotion, you are advised to proceed with caution. Unless you have worked personally with your supervisors before, they may be unaware of your employment status or the tasks that you have completed. You will want to attempt to schedule a meeting with your supervisor or supervisors. During this meeting, you will want to try and sell yourself. Point out all of your accomplishments, mention how advancement has always been a goal of yours, and so forth.

The above mentioned factors are just a few of the many factors that you will want to take into consideration, when trying to determine if you should inquire about a promotion. Should you decide to do so, it is advised that you take a pleasant approach and do not get upset or feel offended if your request for a promotion is denied.

I am a project manager with 5 years of work experience in the healthcare industry in Orange County, CA. I am looking for career advancement to hopefully be an executive one day. Should I get an MBA, and if so should I go full-time or part time? People say the network is important, but I see that you can network in both Full Time or Part Time. If I could find an exciting job and advancement without getting an MBA, I would consider that too. Let me know your thoughts or if you have any recommendations (MBA school, Job, etc.)

Right now I make more money than I ever have in my professional. I work for a major university. I have been offered another job at a more prestigious university but the pay would be about $7,000 less per year than what I make now. The overall benefits are similar. Both offer tuition remission for me and my children. Both have good health benefits that cost about the same. The differences are that I take public transportation to my current job, but in the new one I would have to drive–pay for gas and parking. The job I am in now has no room for advancement, and the hours are pretty much set. My work now is within the realm of my profession (editing) but not what I enjoy doing most (writing). The new job would offer a lot of flexibility. I could work from home sometimes or travel during nonpeak traffic times. It is also a writing job with tons of autonomy. I would make my own agenda. There is a possibility for growth since the institute at the campus is growing. What do you think?
