Do I Have To Do Sales For My First Job Out Of College?

I just graduated with a degree in International Business and minors in Political Science and Spanish. My dad has been telling me that sales is critical for future career advancement but id rather not spend a year of my life selling door to door or cold calling. However those kind of positions are constantly knocking on my door.
So what are some entry level jobs I can get with my degree outside of sales?

I know someone who took a sales position because it was a good company. It took a couple of years for her to be promoted to the marketing division, which is where she wanted to work. I think many companies place their entry level grads in these sales positions to kind of make them pay their dues. For me, in IT, many companies seem to want to put you on the front line doing technical support. It’s just the way it often is first out of school. I’m sure you can at least find a position that doesn’t require cold calling or door to door. Some larger companies will have you manage an area, checking that product displays are correct in their stores. I know a couple people who did that.

you can try customer service or look in a dept of a company that has investor services or if your good in computers check out some entry level openings in the IT departments….or start out as an executive assistant to get some hand on observation of what the big boys do everyday and work your way up the company….also check out south america or spain since you have a minor in spanish that seems logical

Unless you have done an internship some place before hand, sales is the starting point. Unless there is something you really want to do like work in bank. If you are looking for some interesting jobs, go with a public relations firm and become an account associate. Also in the sports and tourism world there are many options as well. Sales doesn’t have to be door to door or telemarketing. If you are so truly dead set against sales then go back to school and get your MBA or become a store manger for McDonalds.

Check out the casino industry if you are willing to relocate. The casinos do pay well. The biggest would be Harrah’s Entertainment which would offer a lot of opportunties (not my favorite bunch of people, but there checks do not bounce). Boyd Gaming and Penn Gaming are two other companies to check out, but they are not as big on looking for people with degrees.
Check out your alumni assocation. They might be able to help you also!
    GOOD LUCK!
