It helped me out.
Look for a college with no class requirements and no homework.
Hi there,
For you to take a school seriously, it should AT LEAST be regionally accredited — nationally accredited is better yet. Take a look at their accreditations, and when in doubt, ask an expert. The business office at your local community college should be able to tell you what various accreditations mean, and how valuable they are.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any good rating system out there for online schools, the way there are for traditional colleges, but I can tell you this about sorting through them:
1. A hard sell is a HUGE red flag. A good school wants good students. If they don’t even care about your academic history, and just seem to be trying to get your check, get out of there.
2. Degrees, credits, and certificates look a lot better to other schools and employers if they’re tied to an established school, and that usually means bricks-and-morter. Fortunately, a lot of colleges have started offering on-line degrees, or at least lots of on-line courses. If at all possible, go on-line with someone who had a respected campus program FIRST.
3. Ask, ask, ask. The only people who know for sure if a college or employer you’re interested in will take the credits/degree you’re working on is them. If you know where you’d like to be, ask that college or company what schools they accept. If you don’t know for sure, ask a big name in the category you’re interested in (IBM or Mac, if you’re going into computers, for example). The professionals will guide you onto the right track.
Remember, on-line degrees aren’t a novelty anymore. They can work, and everybody’s heard of them, so get out there and get your education! Good luck!
