You sign a contract to serve for X number of years. At the end of that period you can either re-enlist or go home.
Well it’s a long process, but we’ll start with the amount of years. By the act of 2004 you can serve 2 years but most likely depending on your MOS you’ll go from 4-6 years. You usually won’t leave right away. You’ll be in the DEP (delayed entry program) where they’ll get you ready for bootcamp. I suggest before you plan on doing a career try out your first contract and see how it goes. It might be for you, but then again it might not.
FIRST – you and your parents talk to a recruiter. All the branches have an office especially in large cities. Keep your parents in the loop.
Next you take a TEST – an important test that tells the recruiter the careers you are mentally able to preform. NEXT you talk about – and with your parents – what career you want.
Then you listen and UNDERSTAND what the recruiter tells you. Review what was said and ask all the questions that has come to your mind – no matter is they feel stupid – because there are NO stupid questions – if you do not feel comfortable or do not understand something you have to ask questions to gain knowledge.
IF you understand – then you sign the contract – for the agreed years and school – get a school in the career you want training in for your civilian life – after your contract expires.
The recruiter will keep in contact with you – and pick you up for transport to boot camp.
IN boot camp you will learn everything about the branch of service you joined. Keep your eyes and ears open – and your mouth shut. There will be very rough motivation to all in your company. Oh, you will be placed randomly in a large group – called a company.
You will march and attend classes to learn things, and march to and from meals, and march just to march. You will fold your cloths and clean and learn about the group your part of.
After Boot Camp – the lets say Navy – will give you ORDERS – legal documents that state you will be at this place at this time – to meet a ship or enter a security gate office and give them these papers. Then you will meet your first ship or base or plane or whatever branch you joined personnel officer and then be assigned your job.
Everything will be explained, really.
Good luck!
Im not sure if this will help you a whole bunch.. but when you enlist, then you belong to whatever you sign up for… then after you serve your time they can ask you to stay, and if you choose not to you get an honorable discharge (or dishonorable discharge)
Youll sign for 4 years at first. once that 4 years is up, they’ll ask you if you want to re enlist. Then you just keep re enlisting until your 20 years is up and you can retire.
