  • Enlistment time includes training time, so the date you enter to the date you leave all counts.
To start out as an officer in the armed forces usually requires a four year college degree. So if you go to college and enter ROTC, you will receive your commission on graduation and you will be eligible for ROTC Scholarships and grants. You can also go to college first and then join the military, where they will offer you a program that will pay off your student loans and possibly a bonus depending on your degree program.
If you enter the Navy or other armed service, you will be eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill and possibly a signing bonus. For a position with the Port Authority, you might consider joining as a military policeman, or one of the investigative departments in any of the services. Also, don’t forget the Coast Guard, which does a lot of the same duties as a Port Authority Officer might find themselves in, as well as general law enforcement.
I would go to a recruiter and ask them about what they have available for what you want to do. The Army might have more opportunities right now, and again, I would strongly suggest you look at the US Coast Guard. I am not a big fan of the Navy, it is a huge organization that has created a bureaucracy where it is easy to get lost.
When you go to the Recruiter, take along a note pad with your questions and write down their answers. Go online and visit websites like goarmy.com and if you think the recruiter doesn’t know what he is talking about, go to another recruiter. Don’t let them push you into a position that you are not convinced is the right one for you.
    Good Luck.
