If you wanted to break into computer career or IT, what is the best way?

What degrees certifications, etc. are the best way to go for a career in computer field / IT?

Here are some helpful links and how I did it.

First, I learned BASIC. Since this is very outdated, I would suggest Visual BASIC. Learn this before you attempt any .NET tasks.

I then worked in Micosoft Access. This helped me prepare to learn the SQL Query Language and helped me understand how to work with simple databases.

Visual BASIC made it easy for me to learn ASP (not .NET)
Once you learn that, learn ASP.

Next I learned Javascript. Now, I would recommend some books on this subject as the web sites tend to be a bit confusing unless you know specifically what you want to accomplish (like fetch system date, time, etc.)

I then started working with SQL Server and MySQL. Start with MySQL as it is similar to SQL in the query language.

I then went off the beaten path and learned PHP. This was a good way for me to get ready for C #.

Then I finally bit the bullet and started down the .net world. I learned ASP.NET, VB.NET and finally C#.

Try to learn Java if you can but that is a road I have not traveled as I have seen what a bad Java Application can look like and it is easy to design one that way if you are not very careful.
