In Career Advancement. Which Matters More Experience Or Title?

I am considering switching jobs to something that is better related to what I would like to do in the long run. However, when turning in my notice my current employer offered to move me to Director if I stay. In the future when I want to move to the other field, will I have a better shot of being a Director in it if I am already a director or if I have more relevant experience.

Definitely experience matters more. The titles change depending on the size of the company, so at some places a “Director” might mean nothing more than “I was the only other person in the department”, not that you actually “directed” anything or anyone. I would not stay at a job merely for the title – take into account the pay, what you’re learning, your exposure within your industry, future growth opportunities, etc.

  • i feel experience is a key factor and is necessary…to understand all facets of a job…

    Experience matters most…specifically your accomplishments.

Experience. Most titles are just bullshit anyway.
