It Career Advancement?

I have been working in IT for about 5 years now. Most of my work is level1 and level2 support but I do tackle more network based issues as well. I have wide variety of skills but am not a master at them. I want to move into a network administrator position in the near future (1-4 years) but don’t know how to go about it if I don’t have the experience?? Moving up is important to me but it seems near impossible without relevant experience. Any suggestions?????

The main things I would do is to take some training courses and get some certifications. Also I would try to start attending free seminars when these are offered in your area. Microsoft and others have these and it would be a great time to pick up familiarity with new operating systems hardware and software that is available. Also, pick an area you are interested in like Scripting or Virtualization. The next time a project comes up in that area you will be positoned to contribute in that area and soon you will find you are recognized as the goto person in that subject matter.
Experience in an area is not required to move up into that area. If that was true no one would ever get to be system admins. The last piece of advice is that don’t be too much in a rush to move up. If you make a mistake in the job you have now you are probably only going to make one person mad. At the Administrator job level a simple mistake can take down hundreds of users or indeed the whole company…
