I’ve Been Researching The Military For A Career Project For One Of My Classes And Had A Question About Weapons?

I have noticed that in a lot of the pictures I am seeing a lot of the soldiers have M4′s and M16′s with modified sights and not the normal iron sight that is seen so frequently in movies and in documentaries. And I am also interested in joining the military so I was just curious about how they go about modifying their weapons. Thanks.

Most combat troops now use the Aimponit CQB sight or the Trijicon ACOG or RCO. These are issued sights not any sort of personal addition. The new M16A4 and M4s have a removable rear iron sight that can be replaced with a variety of optical sights. The 4x Trijicon sights are preferred by the USMC because of the added accuracy and range, while the Army prefers the Aimpoint for its quick target acquisition and ease of use in close quarters. Both services use each sight and that is just a general rule.

Just a historical thing but I was on a raiding party in Vietnam for 3 tours. On the 1st tour we were tasked with raiding the Son Tay Prison in N. Vietnam. We had to go out and buy aimpoint sights for our weapons prior to deploying since there were no sights available. I carried an XM177E2 sub-machine gun, similar to an M-16, except it was referred to as the “Shorty” since it was shorter than an M16.

The 4th gen M16′s allow for different sights to be used. If the site has a rail grabber on it you can change it out. You may see different because they do different things (ie optic, laser or night vision). Same thing for the M4.
