Military Good Enough For A Career In The Lapd?

I was wondering if not having a college degree will go against me while putting in for promotions. If somebody with military experiance and somebody with a college degree were both aplying for the same job, who would get the upper hand?
i just dont want to spend 4 years of my life after being discharged, getting a degree that i dont need, when i could already be a cop and making money.
my ultimate question is if i dont get a degree, will it stab me in the back later in my career, or will military experiance be just as (or more) desiarable for an employer?

LAPD doesnt have a college requirement for a police officer position. You will need college for promotions.
    Taken from their website:http://www.joinlapd.com/qualifications.h…
    Education
Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate is required.
A two-year or a four-year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may be substituted for the high school requirement.

I would definitely go for getting a degree. I’m in the academy right now, and from what I have heard, is that when recruiting they like to see people with military experience.
But on the other hand, later in your career, many agencies are starting education requirements for promotions, 2 year degree for sgt, 4-6 year for captain/chief. (At least in my area)
I would say, get a job now, but when you start definitely get a degree. The up side is that they will pay for it!

I suspect good (i.e. honorable) service to the United States military would probably do BETTER for you than 4 years of college initially.
However, it may be an issue for promotions. That is, to become a detective, you’ll need certain course work behind you.
You may well be able to get what you need while you are serving the police, taking night classes, etc.
They’ll be lucky to have you.

I know that San Bernardino Sherriff’s Dept. doesn’t necessarily like the person from the military because they have to “retrain” them…. Something to consider….
Personally, I would get the degree…

Well, i’m not certain about the LAPD, but all law enforcement promotions where i’m from are based on taking a test. The highest score “wins”.
