Well, believe it or not, but people are still very much involved in online degrees.
In the best programs, which are run by top universities (Columbia, University of London, Stanford, Cornell, etc.) and not by online schools, there are lectures prepared by real professors, homework and exams are graded by real professors, and exams are proctored by a live proctor. These programs often have entire staffs dedicated to their online efforts. This would include video and computer engineering people, and administrative people.
Although these programs are online, students can and do e-mail, telephone, videoconference and even visit their professors (I have done all four).
So, this is not education strictly by computer — the good programs have a lot of professionals involved as well.
There is a stigma though — some people believe no online program can ever be any good. But one out of every six students in the U.S. has taken an online class of some sort, and that ratio is likely to go up.
