Once you have your RT degree you really don't need to go back to school unless you want to get your Masters and teach Radiography. You can advance via on the job training in CT, MRI, Mammography etc.

Once in Radiology you can generally do a series of on the job training, seminars, short courses, and lectures for advanced imaging (Mammography, CT, and MRI) This generally get you a 1-3 dollar raise (at $2 it amounts to about 4K a year)
Bigger money can be found in nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy. Both of these take extra course work. Some places may stipend you if the need is great.
Another current high demand field is ultrasound - specifically vascular ultrasound. It does take some extra coursework but this one pays off big in our area.
Pay will vary by local competition and need. The Director of your local community college program can provide you with the current going rates in your area.
Another area that you can advance in is management. That is a factor of experience, skill, and applying oneself to the job.
