Should I Change Jobs After 10 Years Of Working Insurance?
Should I change jobs? I work as an insurance agent making only $10.80 after 10 years? My boss is cheap! We have 20 year old phone systems, broken office supplies, etc.. I could earn $12.75 starting out and $15 in 3 years at a very reputable company. I think that’s pretty good money but I’m scared I will have a hard time learning something new after so many years. Also I work in an office with 2 other ladies (one of which is very attached to me). I think she might freak! How can I break the news to her gently?

LOL, Having worked in insurance for 12 years myself, I can completely see where you’re coming from here. I say if you can find a job making as much or nearly as much as you do now and you can afford to take a pay cut, if there is one, then go for it. God knows that there isn’t a much more boring industry to work in…lol
you want to better yourself. so take the plunge already! after ten years, you deserve better. a change of pace probably wouldn’t hurt either- i don’t know about you, but i would be bored after 5 years of working in a small place.
your co-worker will understand. just promise to keep in touch with her and do keep your promise- you may need the emotional support in dealing with this new job, which will probably be more demanding than the one you have now.

You have to put yourself first and not worry about what others may think. You need to do what’s best for you and if that means leaving a job that you’ve been at for 10 years because you’re making what I made 10 years ago as a secretary, then by all means do it! And yes, it is scarying leaving a job you’ve been with for so long even if you aren’t happy…it’s the same as leaving a long term relationship when you aren’t happy. The thought of something new and unfamiliar is scary and old unhappy is sometimes preferred because we don’t always like change and the fear of the unknown.

Be happy and move on. Life is way too short. There is so much to do in life. You know you watch movies and read about people that travel all over the world – that could be you or me. Live life to the fullest!
Can’t say I blame you. If the boss is too cheap to pay you what you’re worth and make the necessary replacements, seems that you’ve put in a lot of hard work and hours for way less than you’re worth. A lot of people are not paid what they’re worth and that’s the sad thing about the working world anymore.
What I did was I “fired” my boss and now I work for myself in the comfort of my own home. I absolutely love it. Perhaps it’s time for a change for you…. take a look around and see what’s available, see what your passion is, what you desire and why. Find that “Law of Attraction” for yourself.
As for your friend, just simply put it to her as you did in this thing..perhaps she’ll even follow you or venture out on her own for another job if she’s tired of it as well. Plan to keep up with each other and keep in touch?

YEAH, why are you hestitating! You sound miserable! Don’t stay at that job for fear of hurting someone else’s feelings. Get a new job lined up, put in your notice and go. You can STILL be friends with former co-workers… but it’s YOUR life so do what you want!!

first you need to find yourself another job and then give two weeks notice. Tell everyone that you’ve decided to go another route because you’ve gotten a different job with more money. That way everyone will understand. Ask your co-workers to keep in touch with lunches, etc. You need to worry about yourself first, and although it is hard, sometimes moving forward is the best way. After 10 years you are only making $10.80??? QUIT! if you aren’t moving into underwriting or sales, get into another field. There is lots of money to make in insurance, and we’ll always have a need for it, so it’s a good career, but the path you are on must be administrative. See if your company (or another insurance co) offer classes or something. Do you want more money or a job that makes you happy? You must have lots of insurance knowledge at this point, so you will be valuable to another employer. Just make sure the new job has a future career path to bigger and better things. Don’t worry about your co-workers. Maybe this will be the kick they need to move on as well.
I say go for it…this could be a fantastic opportunity for you. Change can be scary, but I say go for it…
First…everyone is afraid. Two you have to do what is best for you. If she is very attached tell her first and that this job is not working out for you any more and you are moving on. It’s because you need to take care of yourself first. She is going to understand. And yes she is going to freak out but urge her to keep it a secret until you can talk to your boss.

I believe you are under appreciated at your current firm – go for it IF the other job is guaranteed. Jobs are hard to find in this economy. In regard to the lady who might freak if you leave – maybe you should take her out to lunch and break it to her gently. Good luck!@
I hate to say it but $10.80 an hour after 10 years — I think McDonald’s would be more profitable.
Try anything new, you’ll probably make more $ even being inexperienced.
Most jobs are learned on the job anyways. Find something you like, read up on it in the bathroom or any free time, go to a job interview, and fake experience like the rest of the world!
p.s. Often, the only way to get a raise is to quit. It is a pathetic move by your present employer. You spend so much time working hard and making your boss and the company look good and the only time they offer you a decent raise is when you are so tired of it, you quit. Life is short. Don’t waste it sitting on your bum chatting with old biddies and staring at the same old walls and paperwork for chickenfeed.
I didnt even read all of you post but if thats all your making at your place and been loyal for tens years get out of there and get another job. You can prob go anywhere else and start off making more money right away with all of your experience….people are cheap and wont give you anything if you dont ask for it. Did you ever approch your boss where you are now and ask for a raise? Well good luck and I hope you can get your raise you deserve.
Do it! They’ll realize it when you tell them you could make MORE somewhere else, they might talk about raising your pay to match it to keep you happy.

I tried insurance once, for about 1 month. That’s all I could stand. Get out of insurance as soon as you can!
