My brother Jim served in the U.S. Army for 17 years. Today, he works for the Department of Homeland Security, training first responders for emergencies. That sounds like a natural transition, but between those two jobs, Jim spent about a decade years in private business, where his boss couldn’t tell AWACS from ASVAB. He had to learn to translate his military experience into the language that civilian employers could understand.

First of all, I’d like to ask if college degrees based on life experience are as well recognized as degrees earned by a traditional college education?
If so, then I’d like to ask about college accreditation. I found a university online that offers life experience degrees.
They say they are fully accredited, by the following two organizations:
Board of Online Universities Accreditation (BOUA), and
Universal Council for Online Education Accreditation (UCOEA)
Are colleges/universities accredited by those organizations considered good enough by most employers in the United States? I need to know that if I get a degree from this school, that it would carry as much weight as a degree I could get from a traditional accredited college/university.
Many thanks.
I have an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and currently work in sales. I would like to go back to school and earn a Bachelor’s and maybe move onto something higher after that. I took a couple of years off from school after some personal issues that I went through and I’m ready to move on in my life. I’m a little all over the place in my interests – I’m considering Journalism, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Teaching English as a Second Language, Education, stuff like this. I know I sound all over the place but I’m going to choose something and go for a Bachelor’s so that I can improve my marketability and skills.
Money and time are issues for me. I am considering an online degree but the “reputable” ones are pricey. By reputable I mean most advertised, well-known. Asking around, a co-worker told me he was taking courses at ESC – Empire State College which says it is a SUNY school. Sounds good to me since SUNY has pretty good standards in my eyes with the most affordability.
My specific questions are:
1) Anyone have any personal opinions/experience on this particular college?
2) Will getting an online degree be valued appropriately by an employer?
3) Will I have trouble transferring this degree to another school if I were to continue my education either in NY or elsewhere?
4) Do you have reputable, accredited (and affordable) online college recommendations?
I am interested in finishing my college education, but I can’t ‘go back to school’ and I would like to pursue a degree completely online. Does anyone know of any reputable colleges/universities that offer online degree programs?
I am married with 2 kids and work full time. I do not have the time to physically take classes at a school (the closest community college is an hour away). I want to further my education, but just don’t know where to go. I recently withdrew from an online school for several reasons, including the soaring tuition. Does anyone have any recommedations? What about Western Governor’s University? Thanks!
im middle age and would like to pursue an college education online?is it worth my time and money?
I know of a few colleagues that are taking post graduate courses with Phoenix University. Apparently PU has a decent reputation.
My situation is a bit different….25 years in IT with progressive successes to executive level. I have two years at a community college (1980). I was told several years ago that the courses were too old (BAL programming etc) to transfer credits.
So, if I was to restart my education where would you recommend I look? I’d like to get as much “credit” for my IT/business experience and past college courses.
Thanks!
Kennedy enlisted in the United States Army in June 1951.[8] Following basic training at Fort Dix, he requested assignment to Fort Holabird for Army Intelligence training, but was dropped after a few weeks without explanation.[8] He went to Camp Gordon for training in the Military Police Corps.[8] In June 1952, he was assigned to the honor guard at SHAPE headquarters in Paris.[1][8] His father’s political connections ensured he was not deployed to the ongoing Korean War.[1][9] While stationed in Europe he travelled extensively on weekends and climbed the Matterhorn.[10] He was discharged in March 1953 as a private first class.[8][10]
I have noticed that the vast majority of high-ranking officers and NCOs in the military are married. I have also noticed that most servicemembers had some prior employment experience before joining. As I mentioned in my previous questions I am 20, am planning on enlisting and have never dated or worked a job. I also know a newly-commissioned 2LT who is 21 and has never dated. He did JROTC in high school and ROTC in college and was as active in both programs as he could be. However he says many of his buddies make fun of him. He also says that his troops cant take him seriously because of it. They think he’s gay cause he never dated and they think he is spoiled because the army is his first official job. He often obsesses on those and wishes they werent true. Does getting married count as promotion points in the army and does attending formal events help your career as well? Also, would these factors make more of a difference for officers, Warrants and NCOs than lower enlisted?
Lots of people say “go work at a bank”. Thats nice and all but what else can I do? I love seeing where I can put money that will help me in the future like stocks, I always budget everything and see how much I can save or will spend in the future. I was thinking about becomming a financial advisor. I am going into my second year of college if that is important.
