Teaching Career After 45-go Online?

Now that my kids are grown, I want to pursue a career in teaching. I am 47, and want to study online.
Is it true that many people can complete a 4 yr degree in in about 2 yrs?
I want to know all I can about what will be required of me-what degree I need, tests I will have to take, and any state specific requirements.
I am interested in teaching elementary school or middle.
Thanks for any replies/websites/or advise

education is a continuing process and you can definitely pursue a teaching career even at age 50….try enrolling in TEFL or TESOL online. goodluck!

Each state has its own requirements for a credential. For example, in California visit: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/requir…
That will give you a start on what you will need as an undergrad and what further work you’ll need to do to get your credential. Do a google search for “teaching credential requirements your state” and check out their page.
You’ll want to talk to a university counselor about planning out a course of study. Some undergrad programs have (or had) “waiver” programs for getting a teaching credential in given subject areas. If you’re going to teach middle or high school you’ll need to get your major in a specific subject (like Math, English, etc.) that will build towards your later credential. You’ll also have to take a number of tests (CBEST as well as a number of subject area tests) for your subject area endorsement. Again, a university counselor can help you plan that out.
It *might* be possible to get your BA online… but two years is very optimistic. One thing to be *very careful* about are “virtual diploma mills” which are non-accredited phony institutions that will take your money and give you a piece of paper saying you have a degree. It will be worthless and you’ll be out the money. Be sure and check if you do get your degree online that it will count towards the credential you pursue. *Some states don’t recognize distance education degrees*! Again… get some counseling on this, and don’t just trust whatever institution (especially a virtual one) you decide upon for answers.

  • You can if you are willing to work your tail off. I earned 100+ credits in one year on my second BA. I worked 8-10 hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I also had three years of teaching experience which really helped with many things.
I like Western Governors University and would easily recommend the program. http://www.planetisaac.com/teach/2008/12…
