What degree should I earn for a career in music that pays well?

I’m a high school senior and lately I’ve been looking around at different majors/degree programs. None of them seem to appeal to me! However, I do have a passion for music. I consider myself talented, but definitely not any sort of prodigy. So are there any music-related careers (not including the ‘rock star’ one) that pay well? If so, what would be the best degree to achieve such a career?

Thanks for your time,
Andrew

Well to be honest, the playing jobs are very competitve. So while you’re in college you better dedicate every waking second to practicing if you intend to go that route. The steady paycheck jobs are Education. Band Director, Private Lessons, Clinics, etc. A lot of educators are big performers too. My high school Band Director gigged all the time, as well as a lot of Directors I’ve worked with.

The best way get into this is to double major in Music Performance and Education. You can go for playing but have a safety net with teaching. Talk to the Music department’s advisor’s of the college(s) you’re looking at. Goodluck.
