What degree should I get for a career in music that pays well?
I’m a high school senior and lately I’ve been looking around at different majors/degree programs. None of them seem to appeal to me! However, I do have a passion for music. I consider myself talented, but definitely not any sort of prodigy. So are there any music-related careers (not including the ‘rock star’ one) that pay well? If so, what would be the best degree to achieve such a career?
Thanks for your time,
Andrew

Engineering or Law
by engineer I mean the people that study musical physics and design musical products or buildings such as concert halls (also architects and acousticians that specialize in musical facilities). I don’t mean recording studio operators who sometimes use the title ‘recording engineer’.
Law is the ‘no brainer’ of highest income in the music industry – they get a cut from those rock stars. ☺
Most people that get a bachelor’s degree in music either become teachers or work outside of the music industry. Very few, as a percentage, become performers or composers.
"Pays well" is a relative term though. Compared to a waitress, being an elementary school teacher pays well. Compared to the school teacher, attorneys are paid well. Compared to most of the guys I know trying to make a living playing the bar scene, Domino’s Pizza delivery pays well.
One performing career to consider if you’re very talented is the military. The military bands are made up of some very fine performers (many with advanced degrees) and they aren’t paid too badly. You just have to be sure you understand what you’re getting into when you take that path. ☺
