Where Can I Check To See If A Univeristy Is Accredited?

I would like to check out the accreditation of schools I am looking at. I know they need to be accredited. I just don’t know who does that or where to find that information.
(And to make this question more specific, I personally, am looking for a school to get my masters degree- most likely in special education. I am interested in doing some/all online if possible because I have to continue working)
Thanks!

  • You can check at:
Database of Institutions and Programs Accredited by Recognized United States Accrediting Organizationshttp://www.chea.org/search/default.asp
Keep in mind that there are several levels of accreditation (Regional, National, or Programmatic), so you’ll need to do additional research to see if it meets your needs.
For example, a school can be accredited by a group called DETC, which is a listed and legitimate accreditor, but that degree may not qualify to sit for a professional exam such as the CPA

    Good posts above me.
Also keep in mind… when you ask, any school will SAY they are accredited. But any putz with printer and Word can put a certificate on the wall. Don’t go by what the school says or what is on the website, because I guarantee they will say they are. Talk to people who have graduated from the school… (who are not current employees), make sure the school is eligible to receive federal financial aid, find out how long the school has been around….
    Good luck.

To add to what the other poster said, in your field, your university needs to be regionally accredited – and their web site will say they are. It’s a point to be proud of, so it’s on there somewhere. They may also need some sort of professional accreditation in your field, but that I don’t know.
The group that is the accrediting body of your university will depend on where it is located, so I’ll give you the entirel list of regional accreditors, plus which states they cover:
    * Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools – New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, as well as schools for American children in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
    * New England Association of Schools and Colleges – the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont).
    * North Central Association of Colleges and Schools – Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
    * Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities – Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
    * Western Association of Schools and Colleges – California, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, Micronesia, Palau, and Northern Marianas Islands.
    * Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas.
