As a former Marine Engineer, I can offer some thoughts on your question, but times change and my input is unquestionably antiquated. During WW 2 The U.S. had a very large merchant fleet. That is no more. Most of the ocean-going merchant ships today sail under foreign registry and are crewed by foreign crewmen. This, I believe, is mostly due to the lower pay scales for foreign crews. But it is also due to laxer requirements for such employment.
Marine Engineers sailing on American registered ships are required to be licensed by the Coast Guard, I believe. The usual path to such a license is thru a school which specializes in Marine Engineering. Under such constraints, in order to advance in position one has to upgrade the license. Also you need to investigate whether and to what extent crews are unionized.
There are opportunities for marine engineers other than on ocean going ships. In the U.S. rivers, harbors and the great lakes.offer opportunities for a career. My perception is that such opportunities are relatively limited. My further perception is that there are, in the U.S. many more men that have abandoned the career of marine engineering than those who practice it.
Aeronautical Engineering is a differt thing altogether. Most 4 year colleges offer a degree. No license is required, Unions are not a serious issue. Opportunities for employment are, I believe, in abundance compared to Marine Engineering.
You apparently have some serious career decisions in your future. Good luck.
