I am almost done with college and I plan to join. This is what I wanted to do as a kid. I spoke to my friends and people who were in it and I got mixed answers , so any more will help.

Why?
I completed my A.S.while in uniform. then my B.S. and then my M.A.
I was able to do a lot of investing, I collected one apartment building at each duty station.
I worked with rocket scientists, nuclear physicists, gravity vector mathematicians.
And my take home pay was tax-exempt.
I had very high clearances, and full access to a lot of intelligence.
I was able to retire on pension at 42.
I joined the army in 1965 during the Vietnam war. I was sent to Korea for 13 months which was the high point of my military career. I met a lot of friends and made many fond memories. I learned a lot about living away from home, being neat and polite and learning how to get along with people. You turn out to be a man and not a kid.
I would tell the recruiter that you will join if sent to Korea and they will send you there. Korea is a wonderful place to learn about the land and the people.
Why would someone enjoy their civilian career? The same reason, they enjoy what they do. I wanted to go for life, but sometimes your dreams change…
Every base and unit will be different. Just as every job will be different. You may enjoy your job at one unit, but hate it at the next unit… then like it again with a new chain of command.
It all depends on how you handle it and what you want to do.
You get to travel all over the world.
Your job is always dynamic. No going to work at the exact same place, with the exact same people, doing the exact same thing for 30 years.
Retirement is available at 20 years.
You have the pride of doing something that helps other people.
The camaraderie you share with your co-workers is better than any other job in the world.
Any career you would ask about–you will get mixed answers. Any question asked on YA–you get mixed answers. You need to do what YOU want in life. Yes–ask questions–but –live you life the way you choose. I think it is a great career. Good Luck in what ever you do though.
Because the military is a beautiful thing.
