Your Opinions – Is It Better To Be Self Employed, Work In A Small, Med. Or Large Org?
I have been a small business owner and have experience working as an employee for a small and medium organisation. I want to leave my current job and am assessing my options. I work in consultancy and what is important to me is, career advancement, challenge, and working autonomously in an organisation that is flexible. ie I like the idea of being able to work from home, have flex time etc.
Your opinions on the pros and cons of working in either a small, medium or large organisation would be appreciated. Also can you recommend any organisations to check out?

I think it all boils down to your own preference. I, personally enjoy working in a larger company. I have worked for small, medium and large companies. I find that I’m taken care of more in a larger company and appreciated for what I do.
Small companies usually have alot of politics, low salaries, crummy benefits, a lack of proper equipment and training, and little recognition.
Medium companies are often a little bit better on this scale.
Large companies can have some politics, high salaries, great equipment, the best benefits, and active training programs. Bigger companies often have programs whereby the employee is frequently recognized for his/her contributions to the bottom line.
Benefits: This is defined as medical/dental/vision plans, 401(k), profit sharing, stock purchase plans, bonuses, savings plans, etc.
Make a list of jobs that would allow you to work from home. Have you ever thought about being a home appraiser? Pros are that you control your income and can maintain a flexible schedule. If you work hard and secure good contacts with banks you will do well. The con is that you have to be healthy because you will be purchasing your own health insurance. Are you overweight or do you smoke? If so, the chances of poor health are high and working for a company with good benefits would be a better choice. Lastly, you need to use spell check if you want to be respected and get ahead in the workplace.
The answer is not the same for everybody. I would compare the financial advantages of working for another company; do you make enough on self-employment to cover what another job would pay in wages and benefits? Do you like being your own boss?
